The many faces of cobalt

The exhibition is dedicated to the aesthetic and technological potential of cobalt painting in the decorative and applied arts. The exhibition demonstrates the evolution of the use of cobalt - from early Eastern examples to European and Russian porcelain products of the 18th–20th centuries. The exhibition includes items from the Kuskovo museum collection: sets, vases, decorative plates and figurines with a characteristic deep blue pattern on a white background. Particular attention is paid to the role of cobalt painting in the formation of the style of European porcelain (Meissen, Sevres) and its adaptation at Russian manufactories, including the Imperial Porcelain Factory. Products with classical ornaments, landscape and plot compositions are presented. The exhibition reveals the artistic techniques of the masters, the technological features of firing and the importance of cobalt as a key element of porcelain decoration in the history of applied art.
