Konstantin and Vladimir Makovsky. Earthly love and heavenly love

Exhibition “Konstantin and Vladimir Makovsky. Earthly Love and Heavenly Love” at the Faberge Museum presents a large-scale retrospective of the work of the brother painters, revealing the polar vectors of their artistic search. The exhibition, which brings together over 160 works from state museums and private collections (including rare works from Uzbekistan), demonstrates the evolution of the masters' style in the context of Russian artistic culture of the second half of the 19th - early 20th centuries. The ceremonial historical paintings and idealized images of Konstantin Makovsky, who gravitated toward academic decorativeness and salon aesthetics, are contrasted with the socially oriented genre painting of Vladimir Makovsky, an adherent of the realistic tradition and a participant in the Itinerants movement. The name of the project, which refers to the allegorical opposition of the earthly and the heavenly, emphasizes the difference in the brothers’ creative attitudes: from mythological subjects and ceremonial portraits to a truthful depiction of the life and psychology of the “little man.”
