Mikhail Nesterov

The exhibition is a large-scale exhibition project organized by the State Russian Museum together with the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation within the framework of the national project “Family”. The exhibition is located in the Main Administrative and Exhibition Building of the museum-reserve. The exhibition is based on 48 paintings and graphic works from the collection of the Russian Museum, whose collection of works by Nesterov is considered one of the largest in the country. The presented works cover almost six decades of the artist’s creative path (from the 1880s to the 1930s), which allows us to trace the evolution of his method and the scale of influence on Russian art. The core of the exhibition consists of works that marked the birth of the recognizable “Nesterov style”, imbued with quiet contemplation and a special spiritual light. The portraiture of Nesterov, recognized as one of the leading masters of Russian realistic portraiture, is represented by a gallery of images of his contemporaries. Among them is a self-portrait from 1928, a portrait of the philosopher I.A. Ilyin, created on the eve of his expulsion from Russia, as well as portraits of academician I.P. Pavlov and surgeon S.S. Yudina.
