Spaso-Evfimiev Monastery
An architectural ensemble of the 16th–19th centuries, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the white stone monuments of the Vladimir-Suzdal land. Founded in 1352 by the Suzdal-Nizhny Novgorod prince Boris Konstantinovich as a fortress-monastery. The complex includes: Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral (XVI century) with frescoes by Gury Nikitin and Sila Savin; fortress walls and towers (XVI–XVII centuries); Assumption Refectory Church (XVI century); belfry (XVI–XVII centuries); fraternal buildings, St. Nicholas Church, etc. Since the 17th century the monastery served as a prison for religious and political dissidents. In the 1960s. converted into a museum object. Nowadays it is a branch of the Vladimir-Suzdal Museum-Reserve. The exhibitions highlight the history of the monastery, church art and the sociocultural role of monasteries in medieval Rus'. The architectural ensemble retains a high degree of authenticity and is a standard of ancient Russian architecture.
