Sichuan Provincial Museum

The Sichuan Provincial Museum is the largest comprehensive museum in Southwest China. Its history dates back to 1941. For more than eight decades, the museum has repeatedly changed its name and location: in 1950 it was renamed the Western Sichuan Folk Museum, in 1952 - the Sichuan Provincial Museum, and in 2009, after the opening of a new building, it received its modern name - the Sichuan Provincial Museum. In 2012, the museum was awarded the status of a national first-level museum, and in 2024, it became one of the 15 central and local jointly established state key museums in China. The architectural appearance of the museum seamlessly combines traditional Sichuan motifs with modern exhibition requirements: steep pitched roofs, wooden post-frame structures and gray ceramic tiles give the building a recognizable regional character. The total area of ​​the museum complex is 58,600 square meters, the area of ​​the main exhibition building reaches 32,026 square meters. Its 14 exhibition halls, covering approximately 12,635 square meters, house both permanent and temporary exhibitions. The museum's collection includes about 360,000 items, of which more than 70,000 are classified as especially valuable cultural relics. The chronological scope of the collection extends from the Paleolithic to the present, which allows us to trace the continuous history of the development of Sichuan civilization. The permanent exhibition includes three historical sections - "Ancient Sichuan: Prehistoric Period", "Ancient Sichuan: Pre-Qin Period" and "Ancient Sichuan: From the Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties to the Five Dynasties", as well as three thematic exhibitions dedicated to the art of the people of Sichuan, decorative arts and stone sculpture of the Han era. Four temporary halls allow the museum to host up to 60 large-scale exhibitions per year.
