Alvar Aalto Central City Library
An architectural landmark of Vyborg, built in 1933–1935 according to the design of the Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. The building symbolizes the transition from national neoclassicism to simplified forms of regional modernism. One of the unique features is the undulating acoustic ceiling of the lecture hall, which collapsed in the post-war years but was restored according to the original drawings. There are round windows in the ceiling of the reading room through which sunlight enters, while the walls of the room do not contain windows. The library stores a unique collection of books about Vyborg and Karelia in Finnish, Swedish, German and other languages.
