Nizhny Novgorod State Art Museum

The Nizhny Novgorod State Art Museum (NSMA) is one of the oldest museums in Russia, the largest museum of fine arts in the Nizhny Novgorod region. It was founded by decision of the City Duma in 1894, and opened on June 25 (July 7, new style) 1896. Today, the collection of the NGHM includes more than 12 thousand works of domestic and foreign art (iconography, painting, graphics, sculpture, decorative and applied and folk art), among which there are monuments of national and world significance. The exhibition is located in three anchor buildings, which are monuments of architecture and urban planning of federal significance: 1) Russian art - House of the Military Governor (Kremlin, building 3). Here is a collection of Russian art from ancient Russian monuments of the 14th–15th centuries to the end of the 19th century. 2) Foreign art - House of the merchant D. V. Sirotkin (Verkhne-Volzhskaya embankment, building 3). This building houses a collection of Western European paintings, including about 200 works by Italian, French, German, Dutch and Flemish masters. Among them are works by Lucas Cranach the Elder, Giuseppe Maria Crespi, Bernardo Belotto, Jacob Jordaens and David Teniers the Younger. Also here is Konstantin Makovsky’s painting “Minin’s Appeal” - the largest easel work in Russian art on a historical and patriotic theme. 3) Russian art of the 20th century - the former building of the Nizhny Novgorod Exhibition Center (Minin and Pozharsky Square, 2/2). Works by masters of the Russian avant-garde are exhibited here.
