Vanguard. List No. 1. To the 100th anniversary of the Museum of Pictorial Culture

This exhibition is dedicated only to the central Moscow Museum of Painting Culture. It existed for only 10 years, from 1919 to 1929. Since 1924, the MZhK officially became a branch of the Tretyakov Gallery. When in 1929 a sudden decision was made to liquidate the museum and merge with the Tretyakov Gallery, its holdings received more than 700 works of painting, graphics, sculpture, and posters, which became the first large addition to the collection of the latest art of the Gallery. The well-known “Black Square” (1915) by Kazimir Malevich, “Improvisation 7” (1910) by Wassily Kandinsky, “The Violin” (1915) by Lyubov Popova, “Peacock under the Bright Sun (Egyptian Style)” (1911) by Natalia Goncharova, “The Resting Soldier” (1911) by Mikhail Larionov, along with other works were transferred to the Tretyakov Gallery according to the so-called List No. 1, a list of the best works from the MZhK collection, which mainly constituted the exhibition of the museum itself. This list gave the name to this exhibition.
